Plan on a rental car: the airports, hotels and gates are all a drive apart, and every adult in the car needs a REAL ID at the gate.

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see the U.S. Air Force Academy, home of the Falcons, just north of Colorado Springs.

The Academy is a military base, so visiting takes more planning than a typical campus: you need a base pass for the day of your tour and a REAL ID at the gate.

Why this order

  • Day 1: fly into Colorado Springs (or Denver), check in near the North Gate and walk across the bridge from Hotel Polaris to the free Hosmer Visitor Center, no base pass needed.
  • Day 2: enter the base with your approved pass and check in at Arnold Hall for the Admissions briefing and a guided walk through the Cadet Area.
  • With extra time, Garden of the Gods is a free city park about 23 minutes from Hotel Polaris by car.
Plan ahead: registration and base access
  • The campus tour is an Admissions briefing plus a guided walk through the Cadet Area led by recent graduates serving as Second Lieutenant Admissions Advisors. It's open to students in 8th grade through college sophomores, and the student registers as the main attendee with the number in your group.
  • Tour capacity is limited and first come, first served, so book early. Tours can be canceled for base operations, bad weather or Cadet Wing events.
  • About a week before your tour, you'll get an email with a QR code to request a base pass for that day. Security Forces run a background check and text you a decision; if approved, you get a virtual pass for the North or South Gate.
  • Base access is for U.S. citizens with a REAL ID. Visitors who aren't U.S. citizens must go in person to the Pass & Registration Office with a passport, and processing can take up to 72 hours.
  • The tour is physically strenuous, with long walks, uphill stretches and several flights of stairs, at more than 7,000 feet. The Academy doesn't recommend it for anyone with mobility issues.
  • Can't make the trip? The Academy has an interactive virtual tour, and Falcon Forum and Academy Day events are held around the country.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Colorado Springs has snow from fall into spring: the airport averages about 5.7 inches in March and 4.4 inches in November, with highs in the mid-40s°F from December through February.
  • Summer brings the most rain, about 3.1 inches in July, with highs in the mid-80s°F.
  • Weather at the Academy can differ a lot from the rest of Colorado Springs, and wind gusts on the terrazzo can be strong. Bring layers, water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
  • Falcons home games are played on base, and ticket holders need base access too, so check the Falcons schedule before you book.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Off-base drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. We don't list drive times inside the base, because routing maps don't use the Academy's gated roads; allow extra time for the ID check and vehicle inspection at the gate.
  • We list drive times only; check which airlines serve COS and DEN for your dates.

7. Practical tips

Getting on base

  • Watch for the QR code email about a week before your tour, request your base pass right away and bring a REAL ID for every adult. Passes are issued one event at a time, and registering for several at once cancels earlier ones.

Altitude

  • Signs of altitude sickness include headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath and tiredness. The Academy suggests drinking water, not overexerting, avoiding alcohol and tobacco and eating carbs.

Flying in and out

  • COS is about 31 to 38 minutes from the hotels here with no traffic; DEN is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Hotel Polaris.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Colorado Springs Municipal Airport)

  • Spring: March averages about 55°F highs and 27°F lows, April about 61°F/34°F and May about 71°F/44°F.
  • Summer: June averages about 82°F/53°F, July about 87°F/58°F and is the wettest month at about 3.1 inches, and August about 84°F/57°F.
  • Fall: September averages about 77°F/49°F, October about 65°F/37°F and November about 53°F/26°F.
  • Winter: December averages about 45°F/19°F, January about 45°F/19°F and February about 47°F/20°F. The Academy sits higher than the airport and can be colder and windier.

Parent checklist

  • Book a campus tour on the Air Force Academy's Admissions registration site.
  • Book flights into COS (or DEN) and a rental car.
  • Book Hotel Polaris, the Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites or WoodSpring Suites.
  • Request your base pass from the QR code email, and pack a REAL ID for every adult plus your insurance and rental papers.
  • Pack layers, water and sunscreen for the altitude and wind.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (U.S. Air Force Academy): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
