UMass, UAlbany, Quinnipiac and CCSU in 3 Days: An Amherst, Albany and Hamden Trip
A parent-first plan for seeing UMass Amherst, the University at Albany, Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut State from one hotel in Springfield, Mass.: official tour sign-ups, visitor parking at every campus, meals between tours, the Basketball Hall of Fame and Sleeping Giant for siblings, and Hartford-area weather by season.

The short version
Trip at a glance
Schools
University of Massachusetts Amherst · University at Albany, SUNY (Uptown Campus) · Quinnipiac University (Mount Carmel Campus, Hamden) · Central Connecticut State University, New Britain
Days
3: CCSU and Quinnipiac on day 1, UMass on day 2, then UAlbany on day 3 before you fly home. Arrive the day before.
Fly into
Bradley International (BDL), about 26 minutes and 14 miles from the hotel by car with no traffic. Albany International (ALB) is about 19 minutes from UAlbany if you'd rather fly home from there.
Best base
Hilton Garden Inn Springfield, next door to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame: about 41 minutes from UMass and 46 from CCSU with no traffic.
Car or transit
You'll need a car. The four campuses are spread across three states, and UAlbany is about 1 hour 54 minutes west of Springfield with no traffic.
Registration
All four schools have online sign-ups, and Quinnipiac requires pre-registration for in-person visits. UAlbany books its welcome session, walking tour and trolley tour separately.
1. Who this guide is for
This plan is for parents with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, who want to see four Division I universities in one trip: UMass Amherst, the University at Albany, private Quinnipiac in Hamden and Central Connecticut State in New Britain.
Instead of changing hotels, you sleep in downtown Springfield every night. It sits between the Connecticut schools to the south, UMass to the north and Albany to the west.
Why this order
Day 1: CCSU's visit is an information session and a student-led walking tour, about two hours in all. Quinnipiac is about 37 minutes south, and Sleeping Giant State Park is right across the street from its Mount Carmel Campus.
Day 2: UMass calls its Campus Tour & Information Session its most popular visit: hear from admissions staff, then tour with current students and see where they live, learn, eat and socialize.
Day 3: UAlbany's Uptown Campus is about 1 hour 54 minutes west. Its zero-emission trolley tour stops at ETEC, its newest academic building, so you can see the STEM labs.
Each campus checks you in somewhere different
UMass: drive to the Campus Center Parking Garage. For GPS, enter "UMass Amherst Campus Center Parking Garage."
UAlbany: University Hall, home of the Undergraduate Admissions Welcome Center, is just off Collins Circle next to the visitor lots.
Quinnipiac: start at the Mount Carmel Campus, 275 Mount Carmel Ave., Hamden. Quinnipiac calls it the main hub for all undergraduate majors.
CCSU: park in the Student Center or Copernicus Parking Garage at 1615 Stanley St., New Britain.
Tour availability varies by season.
Winters here are snowy: January averages about 35°F highs and 19°F lows at Bradley, and January and February each average about 14–15 inches of snow. Leave extra time for the drive to Albany.
October is the wettest month at Bradley, with about 4.5 inches of rain, and Sleeping Giant's forest is especially striking in the fall.
UMass tours run in light rain or snow. In severe weather the tour may move indoors, and visits are cancelled if the university closes.
Sleeping Giant is one of Connecticut's most popular parks and often fills to capacity, so go early.
2. The suggested 3-day plan
Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Hartford and Springfield rush hours can make the drives much longer.
UMass is 45 miles north of Bradley and 90 miles west of Boston's Logan Airport. UAlbany's main entrance is on Washington Avenue, off I-90 Exit 2.

UAlbany offers its Admissions Welcome Session, walking Campus Tour and Trolley Tour separately, so select each one you want when you register. The welcome session is encouraged but not required.
Park in either Visitors' Lot off Collins Circle and buy the $5 daily permit at the kiosk. Your plate is read automatically, so displaying the receipt is optional.

UMass dining commons
UMass Amherst campus, Amherst, MA
UMass suggests visitors plan a meal in a Dining Common: Berkshire, Worcester, Franklin or Hampshire. The Campus Center has more options.
Quinnipiac's own tip: some of the best pizza on the planet is a few miles down the road in New Haven, whether you prefer Pepe's, Sally's, Modern or Bar.
Open daily, though it may close on certain holidays, and special events can close parts of the museum. It's about an 8-minute walk from the hotel. Some GPS systems know the address as 1000 West Columbus Ave.
Across the street from Quinnipiac. The Tower Trail is a 3-mile gravel out-and-back, the easiest route up, to a stone tower with 360-degree views of Long Island Sound. The park often fills to capacity.
At UMass, have the ParkMobile app ready (Zone 3333) and your plate number, and pay for 3–5 hours.
At UAlbany, buy the $5 daily visitor permit at the kiosk by the Collins Circle lots.
At CCSU, head for the Student Center or Copernicus Parking Garage.
At Quinnipiac, check your confirmation email for parking, since there's no public visitor-parking page.

Parent checklist
Register for all four visits online: CCSU, Quinnipiac (pre-registration required), UMass and UAlbany (select the welcome session and tours separately).
Book the Hilton Garden Inn Springfield for every night and rent a car at Bradley.
Download ParkMobile before your UMass visit.
If you'll hike Sleeping Giant, go early: the park often fills to capacity.
After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.
8. Student-athlete recruiting visits
For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.
Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.
Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.
Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
Division I (Central Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac University, University of Massachusetts Amherst and University at Albany, SUNY): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.
Planning around the season
Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
Add your dates and how you're getting there, and we'll pull this guide into one plan: tour sign-up links, the hotel base, parking or airport notes, the route and meals.
