1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents touring Atlanta's two big research universities with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings: Georgia Tech in Midtown and Emory about 15 minutes away.[S1][S5][S7]

It's one day, with a hotel on Georgia Tech's campus the night before and an optional night at Emory's conference hotel after.[S8][S11]

Why this order

  • Georgia Tech first. Its hotel is the only hotel on campus, so you can walk or drive a few minutes to the morning information session.[S8][S16]
  • Emory second. It's about 12 minutes' drive from Georgia Tech, and Emory runs sessions and tours year-round. Our advice: leave at least 45 minutes between the end of Georgia Tech's tour and the start of Emory's session.[S15][S6]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Tour dates appear only in each school's portal. Check both before you book hotels.[S2][S6]
  • Emory runs visits year-round, and on select days in summer.[S6]

2. The suggested 1-day route

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Routes to Emory use 1380 Oxford Road, because OpenStreetMap didn't match 1390. Emory says it's about 15 minutes from downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, and 30–45 minutes from the airport.[S15][S16][S17][S7]

The night before: check in at the Georgia Tech Hotel

  1. Georgia Tech Hotel → John Lewis Student Center (usual check-in)

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~3 min, 1.2 mi
    Walking
    ~16 min, 0.8 mi[S15][S16]

Day 1: Georgia Tech (morning) → Emory (afternoon)

    1. John Lewis Student Center → Emory, Oxford Road Building

      Driving (no traffic)
      ~12 min, 5.3 mi
      Walking
      Drive or ride service[S15][S7]
    2. Emory → Emory Conference Center Hotel (if you stay)

      Driving (no traffic)
      ~5 min, 1.6 mi
      Walking
      ~28 min, 1.3 mi[S15][S16]
    3. Emory → Georgia Tech Hotel (if you head back)

      Driving (no traffic)
      ~12 min, 5.1 mi
      Walking
      Drive only[S15]
    • Georgia Tech: an information session and a 1½-hour walking tour.[S4]
    • Emory: an information session and a fast-paced, 60–75-minute tour.[S5][S7]

    3. Campus by campus

    • The check-in building varies: the John Lewis Student Center and Stamps Commons, the Ferst Center for the Arts or the Bill Moore Student Success Center. Check your confirmation email; one past registration page put the session in the Student Center's Cypress Theater.[S3][S4]
    • No pre-registration? There's an in-person waitlist on the day.[S2]
