Bay Area and Davis in 2 Days: UC Berkeley, Santa Clara and UC Davis

A parent-first plan for touring Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley and UC Davis in two days from one Berkeley hotel: routing, visitor parking, BART and Caltrain, meals between tours and things for siblings.

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents taking a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, on a first look at Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley and UC Davis, all from one Berkeley hotel.

Why this order

  • From a Berkeley hotel, Santa Clara is about 62 minutes and 45 miles away with no traffic, and UC Davis about 83 minutes and 64 miles. Cal's Visitor Center is a 13-minute walk.[S18][S20]
  • So Day 1 is SCU in the morning and a Cal tour in the afternoon, finishing on foot near the hotel, and Day 2 is a UC Davis day trip.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Cal runs no tours on Nov 21, Nov 26–29 or Dec 19, 2026–Jan 3, 2027. Tours open about 3 months ahead, are booked through Dec 2026, and have no waitlist.[S1]
  • SCU may cancel visits when the air quality index reaches 150 or higher. Check each school's sign-up page before you book travel.[S10]

2. The suggested 2-day route

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing. Bay Area traffic is often heavy, and SCU itself warns visitors to allow for it.[S18][S19][S20][S10]
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: leave at least 2 hours between the end of your SCU visit and the start of your Cal tour for lunch, the drive and parking.

Day 1: Santa Clara (morning), then UC Berkeley (afternoon)

  1. Hotel base → SCU

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~62 min, 45.4 mi
    Transit
SCU's directions: Caltrain to Santa Clara Transit Center, then walk up Palm Dr.[S18][S10]
  2. SCU → Cal (Memorial Stadium)

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~62 min, 45.6 mi
    Transit
    [S18]
  3. Visitor Center → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
Walk instead: ~13 min, 0.6 mi
    Transit
    Not needed[S20]
  • An SCU visit is a 15-minute presentation, a 30-minute panel and a 90-minute tour, about 2 hours 15 minutes in all.[S9][S10]
  • A Cal tour is a free 90-minute outdoor walk, rain or shine, for parties of up to 9. Tours run 7 days a week, including most holidays. Cal's admissions presentation needs its own registration, through Berkeley Admissions' events page.[S1][S4][S2][S30]

Day 2: UC Davis (day trip)

  1. Hotel base → UC Davis Welcome Center

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~83 min, 63.7 mi
    Transit
We plan this day by car[S18]
  2. UC Davis → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~82 min, 63.8 mi
    Transit
    [S18]
  • A UC Davis visit is a 30-minute presentation plus a 90-minute walking tour, for groups of 1–4, with dates posted through Dec 2026.[S13]
  • Bring walking shoes and water; there are hydration stations on campus.[S14]

3. Campus by campus

Visitor parking
  • There's no free parking, and meters are limited to 2 hours. The closest garage is the Stadium Garage at Piedmont Ave. and Gayley Rd. (2175 Piedmont). On game days, parking is limited and expensive. Check Cal's directions page for current rates.[S3]

7. Practical tips

Getting around on transit

  • BART: pay with Clipper or Tap and Ride. Children 4 and under ride free, and youth 5–18 get 50% off with a Youth Clipper card. Discounts aren't available at the vending machines.[S22]
  • Caltrain: adult fares run $4.00 to $15.25 depending on distance; youth fares are $1.00.[S23]

Driving and traffic

  • All drive times in this guide are no-traffic estimates, and SCU warns visitors about traffic. Leave early on Day 1.[S18][S10]

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Oakland Airport, San Jose and Davis)

  • Spring: April averages a high of 66°F and a low of 49°F in Oakland, and 73°F/47°F in Davis.[S27][S29]
  • Summer: July averages 72°F/56°F in Oakland, 81°F/58°F in San Jose and 93°F/57°F in Davis, so bring water for the Davis tour.[S27][S28][S29]
  • Fall: October averages 72°F/51°F in Oakland, 76°F/53°F in San Jose and 80°F/50°F in Davis.[S27][S28][S29]
  • Winter: January averages 58°F/42°F in Oakland with 3.4 inches of rain, 60°F/42°F in San Jose with 2.8 inches, and 56°F/38°F in Davis with 4.0 inches.[S27][S28][S29]
  • Cal and SCU tours run rain or shine.[S1][S10]

Parent checklist

  • Book Cal early. Slots open about 3 months ahead, and there's no waitlist.[S1]
  • Want Cal's admissions presentation too? Register for it separately on Berkeley Admissions' events page.[S2][S4][S30]
  • Go to Davis on a weekday if you want to eat at the Coffee House.[S15]
  • After each school, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student before the next one blurs it.
