1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents taking a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see four large Boston-area universities over a long weekend or school break. All four schools require you to register ahead for guided visits.[S1][S4][S9][S11]

Why this order

  • Northeastern and BU sit close together in central Boston. The Northeastern Visitor Center (40 Leon St.) and the BU Visitor Center (233 Bay State Rd.) are about 1.9 driving miles apart (about 6 minutes with no traffic), or about a 1.5-mile, 32-minute walk.[S1][S6][S27][S28]
  • BC and Tufts are the outer ends of the trip. BC is in Chestnut Hill, Newton, about six miles west of downtown Boston. Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus is about five miles northwest of Boston. The two are about 7.9 driving miles apart (about 21 minutes with no traffic).[S10][S11][S27]
  • So Day 1 is Northeastern + BU (short hops, an easy start) and Day 2 is BC + Tufts (the longer travel day).
Tour availability varies by season.
  • BU doesn't run campus tours when classes aren't in session (much of December and January, spring break in March, and May), though it holds information sessions year-round and runs tours in summer.[S4]
  • Tufts had posted campus visits only through December 11, 2026 when we checked. Check each school's sign-up page before you book travel.[S12]

2. The suggested 2-day route

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, so weekday times will usually be longer.[S27][S29]
  • T times are the MBTA's scheduled ride times for a weekday midday trip and don't include waiting or transfers.[S26]
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: book each day's two visits at least 60–90 minutes apart, end to start, to leave room for lunch, travel and early check-in. BU asks drivers to arrive 20–30 minutes early, and Tufts asks visitors to arrive 15–20 minutes early.[S5][S6][S11]

Day 1: Northeastern (morning), then BU (afternoon)

  1. Hotel base → Northeastern

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~3 min, 0.9 mi
    MBTA
Green Line E from Prudential to Northeastern University, ~4 min ride[S27][S23][S26]
  2. Northeastern → BU

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~6 min, 1.9 mi
    MBTA
E inbound to Copley (~6 min), then B outbound to Boston University East (~10 min). Or walk: ~32 min, 1.5 mi[S27][S22][S23][S26][S28]
  3. BU → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~4 min, 1.3 mi
    MBTA
B inbound from Boston University East to Hynes Convention Center, ~7 min[S27][S22][S26]
  • A Northeastern visit is a 30-minute information session plus a campus tour. Northeastern's visit page says tours take 45–60 minutes.[S1]
  • A BU visit lasts about 2 hours: a 45-minute information session followed by a campus tour.[S5]

Day 2: Boston College (morning), then Tufts (afternoon)

  1. Hotel base → BC

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~13 min, 4.9 mi
    MBTA
Green Line B from Hynes Convention Center to Boston College (last stop), ~34–36 min ride[S27][S22][S26]
  2. BC → Tufts

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~21 min, 7.9 mi
    MBTA
B inbound to Copley (~38 min), then E to Medford/Tufts (~33 min): about 71 min of riding plus the transfer[S27][S22][S23][S26]
  3. Tufts → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~15 min, 6.9 mi
    MBTA
    E from Medford/Tufts to Prudential, ~34–36 min ride[S27][S23][S26]
  • A BC Eagle Eye Campus Visit lasts 2 hours: an information session and a student-led outdoor tour.[S8]
  • A Tufts visit is a 45-minute information session followed by a 70-minute campus tour. A tour-only option is also offered.[S11][S12]
  • BC to Tufts is the longest leg of the trip. BC says a taxi or rideshare is generally the fastest way to its campus, and that travel times vary by time of day. If you're on the T, you can also do Tufts in the morning and BC in the afternoon. It's the same ride in reverse.[S10]

3. Campus by campus

Campus

Boston University

Where visits start
  • Visits start at the Campus Visitor Center in the Alan and Sherry Leventhal Center, 233 Bay State Road, Boston, MA 02215.[S4][S6]
Visitor parking
  • BU says parking near its Visitor Center is limited. It has offered validated guest parking for admissions visitors at the Agganis Arena Garage (Lot A), 925 Commonwealth Ave., entered from behind the building via Buick St. or Harry Agganis Way. The garage is about a 16-minute walk from the Visitor Center, and its pay stations take credit cards only. Check BU's Directions & Parking page for the current season's arrangement and rate.[S6]
  • The CAS Lot (Lot J) at 240 Bay State Rd. has no weekday visitor parking.[S6]
  • There are limited City of Boston meters on Bay State Rd. and Commonwealth Ave. BU suggests the stretch between 100 and 200 Bay State Rd. Meters take credit cards, quarters or the Park Boston app.[S6]
  • BU Transportation also lists the Langsam Garage (Lot B, 142 Gardner St.) and the Kenmore Lot (Lot O, 549 Commonwealth Ave.) for guests. The Kenmore Lot is unavailable during Red Sox games and other blackout periods.[S7]
Nearest T
  • Boston University East on the Green Line B is about a 5-minute walk away. Cross Commonwealth Ave., go up Granby St. to Bay State Rd., and turn left. Look for the Leventhal Center's red awning.[S6]
What to know
  • Tours go into several campus buildings, but not residence halls. If you can't get a reservation, BU has a self-guided mobile walking tour.[S4]

Where visits start
  • Visits start at the Office of Undergraduate Admission in Devlin Hall on the Chestnut Hill campus. Advance registration is required, and BC can't take walk-ins. Despite the name, BC is in Newton, so use a Chestnut Hill (02467) address in your GPS.[S9][S10]
Visitor parking
  • Navigate to 2004 Campanella Way, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467, which brings you to the front of the Commonwealth Avenue Garage. Park on floors 3–6, take the elevator or stairs to the 7th-floor rooftop, and follow the signs to Devlin Hall, about a two-minute walk. Check BC's parking page for any visitor fees.[S10]
Nearest T
  • Boston College is the last stop on the Green Line B. Cross Commonwealth Ave., walk up the hill to the Main Gate, follow Linden Lane to Gasson Hall (the building with the tower), and pass to its left to reach Devlin Hall.[S10][S22]
What to know
  • The tour covers the Middle Campus part of Main Campus. It doesn't include residence halls, athletic facilities or the Margot Connell Recreation Center. BC also has a self-guided audio tour you can take anytime.[S9][S8]
  • BC's hotel list names properties with BC visitor rates, including Hotel Commonwealth, the Colonnade, the Westin Copley Plaza and Copley Square Hotel. BC suggests asking about discounts when you book.[S10]

Where visits start
  • Check in at the Admissions Welcome Desk on the 7th floor of Dowling Hall, 419 Boston Ave., Medford, and arrive 15–20 minutes early.[S11]
  • Events have no waitlists. Walk-ins can't join guided programs but can take a self-guided audio tour.[S11][S12]
Visitor parking
  • Park in the Dowling Hall garage (entrance at 419 Boston Ave.) and take the elevator to the 7th floor. There's more visitor parking in the Cousens Parking Lot at 161 College Ave., about a six-minute walk to Dowling.[S13]
  • Tufts lists hourly visitor parking at $2.50 an hour, with a $20.00 daily maximum. Pay at the kiosks in the parking facilities, through the Tufts Parking Portal ("hourly visitor parking"), or with the AIMS Mobile Pay app.[S13][S14]
Nearest T
  • From the Medford/Tufts stop on the Green Line E, Dowling Hall is directly across Boston Ave. from the station exit. Another option is the Red Line to Davis, then the #94 or #96 bus or a 15-minute walk up College Ave.[S13]
  • At Green Line Extension stations, including Medford/Tufts, you validate your fare at the fare machine: tap your CharlieCard or CharlieTicket and choose "validation."[S19]
What to know
  • The campus is nicknamed "the Hill." Tours are outdoors and involve steep inclines and stairs, so contact Tufts ahead of time about any mobility needs.[S11]

7. Practical tips

Getting around on the T

  • A subway ride costs $2.40 one way with a CharlieCard, CharlieTicket, contactless card or phone, or cash. Children 11 and under ride free.[S19][S20]
  • A 1-Day Pass is $11.00 and a 7-Day Pass is $22.50. Contactless payment doesn't work with day or week passes. The MBTA calls the CharlieTicket and contactless payment best for visitors, and you can buy a CharlieTicket from any subway station's fare machine.[S19]
  • Since Sept 1, 2026, a pilot lets you make unlimited subway, bus and ferry transfers within two hours on the same payment method. At street-level Green Line stops, the fare box takes cash but doesn't give change.[S19]
  • For CharlieCard help, the MBTA's Charlie Service Center is at 296 Washington St., near the State and Downtown Crossing stations.[S21]

Driving and traffic

  • Northeastern asks visitors to plan for traffic in its busy urban area. BU says visitor parking is limited. BC encourages public transit, rideshare or taxis.[S1][S4][S10]
  • Drive times in this guide are no-traffic estimates, so add time on weekdays.[S27]
  • Near Fenway and Kenmore, BU's Kenmore Lot is unavailable during Red Sox games and other blackout periods, so check the Red Sox schedule if you're parking near BU.[S7]

Weather by season (Boston Logan, 1991–2020 NOAA normals)

  • Spring: April averages a high of 56°F and a low of 41°F, and March still averages 9.0 inches of snow.[S49]
  • Summer: July averages a high of 82°F and a low of 66°F.[S49]
  • Fall: October averages a high of 62°F and a low of 48°F, and November a high of 52°F and a low of 38°F.[S49]
  • Winter: January averages a high of 37°F and a low of 23°F, with about 14 inches of snow in each of January and February. Rain or snow totals 3.2–4.3 inches every month.[S49]
  • Tours at BC, Tufts and Northeastern are outdoors or partly outdoors, so pack layers and rain gear.[S1][S8][S11]

Parent checklist

  • Register for each visit before you book flights or a hotel. BU says weekend and vacation-week programs often fill weeks ahead.[S4]
  • Bring a credit card if you'll park at BU's Agganis Arena Garage, where the pay stations take credit cards only.[S6]
  • If you're bringing younger siblings, ask each school when you register whether they can join the tour.
  • After each school, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student before the next visit blurs it.

Optional add-on: Harvard and MIT (Cambridge)

Harvard and MIT are both on the Red Line in Cambridge, about 2.5 driving miles apart (about 9 minutes with no traffic). The Red Line between Harvard and Kendall/MIT is about a 6-minute ride. From the Sheraton, it's about a 6-minute drive to MIT and 9 to Harvard with no traffic.[S27][S24][S26]

Campus

Harvard College

Where visits start
  • Visits start at the Admissions Visitor Center in the Elizabeth Cary Agassiz House, Radcliffe Yard, 5 James St., Cambridge. Registration is required.[S15][S16]
Visitor parking
  • Street meters are scarce, run 1–2 hours and take quarters only. Harvard lists three commercial garages: Pilgrim Parking (41 Church St.), University Place Garage (124 Mt. Auburn St.) and The Charles Hotel Garage (1 Bennett St.).[S15]
  • You can also buy an online pass for Harvard's Oxford St. or Broadway (7 Felton St.) garages. Choose department "Admin. & Financial Aid," code 3003.[S15]
Nearest T
What to know
  • Heads-up for families: Harvard asks registrants to keep parties to 3 people total. Larger families can take the self-guided tour. Tours don't go inside campus buildings, and there are no sessions or tours in December, January or May.[S16]

MIT

Where visits start
  • Visits start at the MIT Welcome Center, 292 Main St., Cambridge, MA 02142. Reservations are required, and MIT doesn't take walk-ins.[S17][S18]
Visitor parking
  • MIT strongly discourages driving and suggests parking farther out on the Red Line and riding in. If you must drive, it points to the Hayward Parking Garage at 33 Amherst St., which it calls expensive and unpredictably limited. MIT Admissions can't reimburse parking.[S17]
