1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents flying in with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, with time left for Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa downtown.

All in-person campus tours begin at the Welcome Center in the yakʔitʸutʸu residential community, and visitors on a tour park next door in Parking Structure 131.

Why this order

  • Arrive the day before and stay on Monterey Street or downtown, so tour morning is a short walk or drive.
  • Tour day: Cal Poly's 90-minute walking tour is led by a current student, one of its Poly Reps, and visits the colleges and popular campus spots. On select days you can add a housing tour and a visit to an academic college.
  • Afterward, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded in 1772 as the fifth California mission, is about 6 minutes from the Welcome Center by car and charges no admission.
Pick the right visit
  • The student-led walking tour is 90 minutes; register ahead on Cal Poly's tour registration page, where space is limited.
  • Can't make a tour? Pick up a self-guided tour brochure at the Welcome Center on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Walk-ins are allowed, but Cal Poly asks all visitors to register first.
  • Cal Poly also offers virtual tours of its academic colleges, housing, student life and campus facilities.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • The Welcome Center is closed on weekends and during campus closures, and its hours can change during academic breaks. If you plan to visit during a break or holiday, call 805-756-5934 first.
  • Groups of 15 to 100 students (high school or older) can request a date for a group tour on select weekdays, which adds a 30-minute admission presentation to the 90-minute walk.
  • Cal Poly says San Luis Obispo's weather is generally mild but can fluctuate, so bring a water bottle, a light jacket, a hat and sunscreen.

2. The suggested 1-day plan

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, and walking times use OpenStreetMap foot routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Times to campus are to the Welcome Center in yakʔitʸutʸu, next to Parking Structure 131.

7. Practical tips

Driving and parking

  • Have your license plate number handy: you'll need it at the Structure 131 pay station.
  • Coming for a campus event? The free ADA visitor pass isn't available for events.

Flying in and out

  • San Luis Obispo's airport (SBP) is about 17 minutes from campus. Santa Barbara (SBA) is about 1 hr 59 min away with no traffic, so leave extra time.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: San Luis Obispo Poly)

  • Spring: April averages about 69°F highs and 47°F lows, with about 1.4 inches of rain.
  • Summer: July averages about 78°F/54°F and is nearly dry, with under 0.1 inch of rain.
  • Fall: October averages about 78°F/52°F, with about 0.8 inches of rain.
  • Winter: January averages about 65°F/44°F and is the wettest month, with about 5.1 inches of rain.

Parent checklist

  • Register for a Cal Poly campus tour on the official registration page (or register for a self-guided visit).
  • Check that your date isn't a weekend, break or campus closure, when the Welcome Center is closed.
  • Book flights into SBP or SBA and a rental car.
  • Book a hotel near campus.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, a light jacket, a hat and sunscreen, plus a card for the cash-free campus.
  • After the visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (Cal Poly, California Polytechnic State University): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
