1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see two schools on either side of the Mississippi River: the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks and the Southern Illinois Salukis.

SEMO is in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and SIU Carbondale is in Carbondale, Illinois, about 46 miles east by road. The photo in this guide shows Shryock Auditorium and the Paul and Virginia fountain on SIU's campus.

Why this order

  • Arrive the day before: St. Louis Lambert is about 2 hours 25 minutes from the downtown Cape Girardeau hotels.
  • Day 1: a SEMO walking tour with an admissions presentation, then an evening in Cape Girardeau or a short drive to Trail of Tears State Park.
  • Day 2: drive about 1 hour 5 minutes to SIU Carbondale for an admissions meeting, campus tour and residence hall visit, then Giant City State Park or the drive back to St. Louis.
Plan ahead: registration and timing
  • Book SEMO visits on its visit portal. Options include a Weekday Walking Tour, Saturday Campus Tours, a River Campus tour for the Holland College of Arts and Media, and Twilight Hours on select Thursdays.
  • Show Me Day is SEMO's big visit day; register through its visit page.
  • SIU offers daily visits Monday through Friday throughout the year, with two visit sessions each day. Book on SIU's on-campus visit portal.
  • On an SIU visit you can also request an appointment with a representative in your student's major and eat lunch in the dining halls at a reduced rate.
  • SEMO encourages parents and visitors to request a free visitor permit from Parking Services in advance.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Winters in Cape Girardeau are cool: January averages about 43°F highs and 26°F lows.
  • May is the wettest month near Cape Girardeau, averaging about 5.3 inches of rain, with April close behind, so pack an umbrella for a spring walking tour.
  • Summers are hot: July averages about 89°F highs, so plan the walking part of a summer tour for the morning.
  • Check each school's athletics calendar for home games on your dates, since game days bring extra traffic and parking demand.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, and walking times use OpenStreetMap foot routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Times to SEMO are to Academic Hall, home of the admissions office, and times to SIU are to the Tedrick Welcome Center at 1264 Lincoln Drive, where SIU campus visits begin.

7. Practical tips

Getting to campus

  • At SEMO, request the free visitor permit from Parking Services before you go, or park at a paid meter.
  • At SIU, head to the Tedrick Welcome Center at 1264 Lincoln Drive and use the reserved visitor spaces to its west.

Flying in and out

  • St. Louis Lambert (STL) is about 2 hours 25 minutes from the downtown Cape Girardeau hotels and about 2 hours 28 minutes from SIU, so the trip makes an easy loop: fly in, see SEMO, cross to Carbondale, and drive back to St. Louis.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Cape Girardeau Municipal AP station)

  • Spring: April averages about 69°F highs and 47°F lows, with about 5.2 inches of rain; May is the wettest month at about 5.3 inches.
  • Summer: July averages about 89°F/69°F, with about 3.9 inches of rain.
  • Fall: October averages about 71°F/46°F, with about 3.6 inches of rain.
  • Winter: January averages about 43°F/26°F, with about 3.5 inches of precipitation.

Parent checklist

  • Book a SEMO visit on its visit portal.
  • Book an SIU on-campus visit on its admissions portal.
  • Request SEMO's free visitor parking permit ahead of time.
  • Book flights into St. Louis and plan a rental car.
  • Book a hotel in Cape Girardeau, or in Carbondale for the second night.
  • Check the forecast, especially in April and May, the wettest months near Cape Girardeau.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

2 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (Southeast Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
