1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, who want to see three Division I universities in southeast Texas in one trip: Texas A&M in College Station, Sam Houston State in Huntsville and Prairie View A&M in Prairie View.

Instead of changing hotels, you sleep at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center every night. Texas A&M itself points visitors to it as the on-campus hotel near the visitor center.

Why this order

  • Day 1: Texas A&M's 90-minute walking tour, led by the Howdy Crew, covers the historic heart of campus, residence hall styles and select academic facilities. It's a short walk from the hotel.
  • Day 2: Sam Houston State offers guided tours in English or Spanish, transfer tours and self-guided tours. Huntsville is about an hour and 8 minutes from the hotel with no traffic.
  • Day 3: Prairie View A&M's family tour is an information session plus a guided walking tour. Campus is about 65 minutes from the hotel and about 71 minutes from IAH, so it fits on the way home.
Prairie View allows two guests per registered student
  • Every student must register for a Prairie View campus tour, and each registration covers at most two guests. A guest in grades 9–12 must register as a student too.
  • If you're bringing more than two family members, plan for the extra people before you book; questions go to campustour@pvamu.edu.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Texas A&M's visitor center is closed Nov. 25–27, 2026 (Thanksgiving), Dec. 21, 2026–Jan. 1, 2027 (winter break) and Jan. 18, 2027 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day).
  • Sam Houston State's campus-wide preview, Saturday@SAM, is March 6, 2027.
  • On Texas A&M football weekends, hotel self-parking is $50 a night and reserved for overnight guests.
  • From Nov. 30, 2026, the Texas A&M Hotel and its restaurants no longer accept cash; bring a card.
  • The Bush Library is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

2. The suggested 3-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Houston traffic can make the last leg to IAH much longer.
  • Texas A&M says College Station is less than three hours from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and Fort Worth, and flights from Easterwood to Dallas-Fort Worth are less than an hour.

7. Practical tips

Driving and parking

  • At Texas A&M, leave the car in the hotel's garage and walk; otherwise use the University Center or Gene Stallings Blvd. garage ($15 maximum per entry).
  • At Sam Houston State, watch for the parking details sent with your tour registration.
  • At Prairie View, budget a few minutes at the Thomas E. Gray Information Center for your one-day visitor pass.

Tour day comfort

  • Texas A&M's tour is a 90-minute walk on a 5,200-acre campus; wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
  • Arrive 15–30 minutes early at Texas A&M.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: College Station Easterwood Airport)

  • Spring: April averages about 79°F highs and 58°F lows.
  • Summer: July averages about 95°F highs and 75°F lows, and August about 97°F highs.
  • Fall: October averages about 82°F highs and 60°F lows, with about 4.9 inches of rain; November highs drop to about 71°F.
  • Winter: January averages about 62°F highs and 41°F lows.

Parent checklist

  • Register for all three visits online: Texas A&M (at least three days ahead), Sam Houston State and Prairie View A&M (two guests per student).
  • Book the Texas A&M Hotel for every night, and check whether your dates fall on a football weekend ($50-a-night parking).
  • Book a flight into Easterwood (CLL) and home from Houston (IAH), or plan to drive.
  • Bring a credit or debit card: the hotel goes cashless Nov. 30, 2026, and the Bush Library takes cards only.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

3 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University and Prairie View A&M University): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
