1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents flying in with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see one school properly: Duke's information session and campus tour, and a look around the Gothic West Campus.[S1]

Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) is about 20 minutes from Duke by car, and both of our hotel picks are on campus.[S1][S6][S12]

Why this order

  • Arrive the day before. RDU is about 20 minutes from Duke by car, so an afternoon flight still leaves time to check in on campus.[S1]
  • Visit day: a 30-minute information session plus a 90-minute student-led outdoor walking tour, so it fills a morning or an afternoon.[S1][S2]
  • Optional second school: UNC-Chapel Hill is about 22 minutes and NC State about 37 minutes by car from Duke's admissions office, with no traffic.[S17]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Visit dates appear only in the portal. Duke says its visit schedule is generally released 6–8 weeks before each semester.[S2]
  • Tours are outdoors and may be canceled or delayed for severe weather or campus closures.[S1][S2]
  • Reservations are required. A limited waitlist may be available, and it isn't managed on site.[S2]

2. The suggested 1-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Duke's own estimate for the RDU drive is 20 minutes; our routed time to the hotels is longer.[S17][S18][S19][S1]
  • Nominatim placed the Washington Duke Inn at 3001 Science Drive rather than its 3001 Cameron Blvd address, so treat its times as approximate.[S6][S19]
