A parent-first plan for flying in to see the University of Iowa: the official daily visit sign-up, which ramps to park in, hotels in downtown Iowa City a short walk from the Admission Visitors Center, and free museums and Hawkeyes games for siblings.

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents flying in with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see the University of Iowa, with time left to explore Iowa City.

Iowa City is a metro area of about 100,000 people, roughly 300 miles from Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. It is also a UNESCO City of Literature.

Why this order

  • Arrive the day before and stay downtown, so visit morning is a short walk to campus.
  • Visit day: an Iowa Overview Session covers admission, housing, student life and financial aid, followed by a campus walking tour that includes the residence hall showroom. Optional academic sessions are available.
  • Afterward, see the Old Capitol Museum or the Museum of Natural History, both free.
Register first, then book travel
  • Space is limited, so Iowa asks you to register for your visit before making travel arrangements.
  • Check-in locations vary by event. Your confirmation email or itinerary lists where to check in.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Daily visits are offered in the morning or afternoon. Academic group sessions and individual appointments are not offered on Saturdays, and activities are more limited when classes are not in session.
  • Iowa also holds Hawkeye Visit Days and Engineering Saturdays, and offers virtual visit options.
  • Tours may pause or be canceled in bad weather, and walking tours are not offered if the university cancels classes.

2. The suggested 1-day plan

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, and walking times use OpenStreetMap foot routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Times are to the Admission Visitors Center in the Pomerantz Center; your confirmation tells you where your visit starts.

7. Practical tips

Driving and parking

  • Park in the North Campus Ramp or IMU Ramp, both a short walk to check-in. You can check ramp availability online before you go.
  • CID to downtown Iowa City is about 36 minutes and 26 miles by car with no traffic; MLI is about 1 hour 18 minutes and 64 miles.

Without a car

  • From the downtown hotels, the Admission Visitors Center, the Old Capitol and the Stanley Museum of Art are all short walks. Cambus is free when classes are in session.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Iowa City)

  • Spring: April averages a high of 62°F and a low of 37°F, and May brings about 5 inches of rain.
  • Summer: July averages 84°F/63°F, and June is the wettest month at about 5.5 inches. Bring water for the walking tour.
  • Fall: October averages 63°F/40°F, and November is 48°F/28°F.
  • Winter: January averages 29°F/12°F, and December through February each average about 7 to 8 inches of snow. Tours may pause in bad weather.

Parent checklist

  • Register for a daily visit on Iowa's official page before you book flights and hotels.
  • Note the check-in location in your confirmation email or itinerary.
  • Pack comfortable shoes for the campus walking tour.
  • After the visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (University of Iowa): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
