LA and Santa Barbara in 2 Days: UCLA, USC and UC Santa Barbara

A parent-first plan for touring UCLA, USC and UC Santa Barbara in two days from one Westwood hotel: routing, visitor parking, transit, meals between tours and things for siblings.

The short version

Trip at a glance

Schools
UCLA, University of Southern California (USC), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB)
Days
2 (UCLA + USC on Day 1, UCSB on Day 2)
Best base
Westwood, next to UCLA
Car or transit
A car. UCSB is about 98 miles from Westwood. USC has a Metro E Line station a short walk from its Admission Center, but UCLA is served by buses only.
Weekday needed
Yes for Day 1: USC runs tours Monday–Friday only. The UCSB Visitor Center is open Monday–Friday.
Registration
All three schools require advance registration for guided tours

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents taking a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, on a first look at UCLA, USC and UC Santa Barbara. All three schools require you to register ahead for guided tours, and all three charge for visitor parking.[S2][S6][S15][S5][S17]

Why this order

  • UCLA and USC are both in Los Angeles, about 14 driving miles apart (about 20–22 minutes with no traffic, which LA rarely has). A Westwood hotel puts you a short walk from UCLA.[S22][S24]
  • UCSB is the outlier, about 98 driving miles from Westwood, or roughly 2 hours each way with no traffic, so it gets a day of its own.[S22]
  • So Day 1 is UCLA + USC, on a weekday because USC tours run Monday–Friday, and Day 2 is a UCSB day trip up the coast.[S6]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • UCLA runs no tours during winter break, the week before fall quarter or the Saturdays of finals week, and registration usually opens about 2 months ahead. Check each school's sign-up page before you book travel.[S2]

2. The suggested 2-day route

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing. Real weekday LA driving times will usually be longer, often much longer at rush hour.[S22][S23][S24]
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: leave at least 90 minutes between the end of your UCLA visit and the start of your USC visit for lunch, the cross-town drive and parking. USC's parking permit must be active for your whole visit.[S6]

Day 1: UCLA (morning), then USC (afternoon)

  1. Hotel base → UCLA

    Driving (no traffic)
Walk instead: ~12 min, 0.6 mi (Luskin Conference Center to Ackerman Union)
    Transit
    Not needed[S24]
  2. UCLA → USC

    Driving (no traffic)
~22 min, 14.4 mi (Luskin to the Ronald Tutor Campus Center)
    Transit
Metro and Big Blue Bus lines serve UCLA. USC's closest rail stop is Expo Park/USC on the Metro E Line, about a 5-minute walk from the Tutor Campus Center.[S22][S4][S24][S26]
  3. USC → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~19 min, 12.7 mi
    Transit
    Same as above, in reverse[S22]
  • A UCLA visit takes about 2 hours with the 30-minute presentation, or about 1.5 hours without it. Tours run rain or shine and include hills and stairs.[S2]
  • A USC tour lasts 75–90 minutes and runs Monday–Friday.[S6]

Day 2: UC Santa Barbara (day trip)

  1. Hotel base → UCSB

    Driving (no traffic)
~2 hr, 98 mi (Luskin to the Student Affairs and Administrative Services Building, SAASB)
    Transit
We plan this day by car[S22]
  2. UCSB → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~2 hr, 98 mi
    Transit
    [S22]
  • UCSB's directions: from US 101 southbound, take the Storke Rd./Glen Annie Rd. exit (108), then El Colegio Rd. → Ocean Rd. → Mesa Rd. to the campus kiosk. From US 101 northbound, UCSB directs you to Route 217 and the Henley Gate entrance. For traffic updates, tune to AM 1610. Check UCSB's visit page for the current directions.[S13]
  • Time to spare? Santa Barbara's MOXI museum and a kayak tour are in the siblings section below.

3. Campus by campus

  • Parking Structure 8 (Level 4, zone 2508) is $5–$14 for 1–3 hours and $18 all day. All-day permits expire at 7:59 am the next day.[S5]
  • For recorded directions, call (310) 825-4321. From the 405, use the Wilshire or Sunset exits.[S4]
Nearest transit
  • Buses only: Metro 2/302, 20, 720, 734 and 788; Big Blue Bus 1, 2, 3M, 8 and Rapid 12; Culver CityBus 6/Rapid 6.[S4]

Campus

USC (University Park campus)

Where visits start
  • The Admission Center is in Room 202 of the Ronald Tutor Campus Center (Sample Hall).[S8]
  • Tours are free, but registration is required. Late arrivals get a self-guided brochure instead of the tour.[S6]
Visitor parking
  • USC requires a $20 parking permit, active for your whole visit. The Admission Center doesn't validate.[S6]
  • USC Transportation lists Text2Park at $20/day (plus $0.50) in the Downey, Flower, Royal and McCarthy structures; hourly parking at $4/hour, up to 4 hours; pay-by-plate at $20 in McCarthy, Figueroa and Royal; and the Grand Ave. Structure at $2/hour or $14/day.[S10]
  • Entrances: Royal St. (700 W. Jefferson Blvd.), McCarthy Way (620 W. McCarthy Way, open 24 hours) and the Figueroa Structure (3520 S. Figueroa St.).[S12]
  • Game-day rates may differ. USC posts a separate game-day schedule for Saturday, Oct 31, 2026 (USC vs. Ohio State).[S11][S27]
Nearest transit
  • Expo Park/USC on the Metro E Line, about a 5-minute walk from the Tutor Campus Center.[S24][S26]
What to know
  • Exposition Park, with its museums, is across the street. Public access to campus is restricted after 9 pm.[S9]
  • USC doesn't track demonstrated interest, so a tour won't affect admission. ADA accommodation requests go to visitusc@usc.edu or (213) 740-6605 at least five business days ahead.[S6]

7. Practical tips

Getting around on transit

  • LA Metro: a ride is $1.75. Tap to ride and you never pay more than $5 a day or $18 a week. Transfers are free within 2 hours, and children under 6 ride free with a fare-paying adult.[S25]
  • Santa Barbara MTD: $2.50 one way; youth (K–12) $1.25. Children under 45 inches ride free, up to 3 per adult. A day pass is $6. Pay exact change or tap with Tap2Ride.[S36]

Driving and traffic

  • All drive times in this guide are no-traffic estimates, so add generous time in LA on weekdays.[S22]
  • Parking is paid at all three campuses: about $18 at UCLA (all day in Structure 8), $20 at USC and $8–$12 at UCSB (daily).[S5][S6][S17]
  • USC home football games can change parking rates.[S11]

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: LAX and Santa Barbara Airport)

  • Spring: April averages a high of 68°F and a low of 54°F in LA, and 68°F/48°F in Santa Barbara.[S34][S35]
  • Summer: July averages 75°F/64°F in LA and 73°F/58°F in Santa Barbara.[S34][S35]
  • Fall: October averages 74°F/60°F in LA and 73°F/51°F in Santa Barbara. November is 71°F/54°F in LA and 69°F/44°F in Santa Barbara.[S34][S35]
  • Winter: January averages 66°F/49°F in LA, with 2.9 inches of rain, and 64°F/41°F in Santa Barbara, with 3.8 inches.[S34][S35]
  • UCLA tours go rain or shine. Santa Barbara's average lows run several degrees cooler than LA's, so bring layers for the morning.[S2][S34][S35]

Siblings on tours

  • USC requires guests 12 and younger to be with an adult.[S6]
  • UCLA requires a reservation for every guest, so book a spot for each sibling.[S2]

Parent checklist

  • Book Day 1 on a weekday. USC tours run Monday–Friday.[S6]
  • Register early. UCLA has no waitlist, and registration usually opens about 2 months out.[S2]
  • Have a card ready for every campus's parking. UCSB kiosks give no change.[S17]
  • If you're bringing younger siblings, ask each school when you register whether they can join the tour.
  • After each school, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student before the next one blurs it.
