1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents flying in with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see Rice, with time for Houston's Museum District and Hermann Park, which sit right next to campus.[S5]

Both of our hotel picks appear on Rice's own list of hotels for families.[S6]

Why this order

  • Arrive the day before and stay in the Museum District, so visit day starts with a walk, not a freeway.[S17]
  • Visit day: a Student Life Presentation hosted by Rice students, then a student-led campus tour; on select dates you can add an Academic Life Panel.[S1]
  • Afternoon: museums and Hermann Park for siblings.[S5]
  • Optional second school: the University of Houston is about 11 minutes away by car.[S16]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Dates and times appear only in the portal. The pattern: weekday presentation-then-tour sessions, plus select weekend visits.[S2]
  • No sign-up yet? The Welcome Center in Sewall Hall runs a self-guided option, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday, with no pre-registration.[S1]

2. The suggested 1-day plan

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, and walking times use OpenStreetMap foot routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Houston traffic can stretch drive times a lot.[S16][S17][S18]
  • Flying into Bush Intercontinental (IAH) instead? It's about 35 minutes (24.1 mi) to Hotel ZaZa with no traffic, versus about 23 minutes from Hobby (HOU).[S16]
