1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents taking a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, on a first look at three Southern California coast campuses. All three charge visitors for parking.[S4][S8][S14]

Why this order

  • CSULB and UCI are about 21 driving miles apart (about 30 minutes with no traffic). An Irvine hotel is about 8 minutes from UCI and about 27 minutes from CSULB.[S17]
  • UCSD in La Jolla is the far end, about 74 miles from Irvine, or roughly 90 minutes with no traffic. It gets a day of its own.[S17]
  • So Day 1 is CSULB in the morning and UCI in the afternoon, ending near the hotel, and Day 2 is UCSD.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • UCSD runs no Triton Tours on Oct 23, Nov 11 or Nov 26–28, 2026, and none after the first week of December 2026.[S2]
  • CSULB tours are cancelled if it's raining. Check each school's sign-up page before you book travel.[S12]

2. The suggested 2-day route

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing. Real weekday times on the 405 and I-5 will usually be longer.[S17][S18][S19]
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: leave at least 90 minutes between the end of your CSULB tour and the start of your UCI visit for lunch, the drive and parking.
  • CSULB asks you to arrive at least 20 minutes early, and UCSD asks weekday visitors to allow at least 45 minutes to park and reach check-in.[S12][S3]

Day 1: CSULB (morning), then UC Irvine (afternoon)

  1. Hotel base → CSULB

    Driving (no traffic)
~27 min, 18.9 mi (Sonesta to Brotman Hall)
    Transit
We plan this trip by car[S17]
  2. CSULB → UCI

    Driving (no traffic)
~30 min, 20.6 mi (Brotman Hall to Aldrich Hall)
    Transit
    [S17]
  3. UCI → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~8 min, 3.3 mi
    Transit
Sonesta's UCI rate includes a campus shuttle, subject to availability[S17][S9]
  • A CSULB tour is a 1-hour walking tour for up to 4 guests (5 people per registration). It starts in Brotman Hall, Room 289 (2nd floor).[S10][S12]
  • UCI offers in-person and livestream tours. For tour length and meeting point, check UCI's official sign-up page.[S7][S6]

Day 2: UC San Diego

  1. Hotel base → UCSD (P704 parking)

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~90 min, 73.5 mi
    Transit
We plan this day by car[S17]
  2. UCSD → hotel base

    Driving (no traffic)
    ~89 min, 73.3 mi
    Transit
    [S17]
  • UCSD's pages give different lengths: its tours page describes a Triton Visit as a 30-minute admissions session plus a 60-minute walking tour; its FAQ describes a 90-minute walking tour; and its directions page says tours last up to two hours. Plan for up to two hours.[S1][S32][S3]
  • Each registration covers the student plus up to four guests.[S1]

3. Campus by campus

7. Practical tips

Getting around on transit

  • San Diego MTS (the trolley at UCSD): $3.00 one way or a $7.00 day pass. The reduced fare (ID required) is $1.50 one way. Check MTS for youth fares.[S20]
  • Long Beach Transit (CSULB): $1.25 a ride or a $4 day pass, and children 0–4 ride free.[S21]

Driving and parking

  • All drive times in this guide are no-traffic estimates, so add time on weekdays.[S17]
  • Parking is paid at every campus: about $15 at CSULB (daily), $16 at UCI (general daily), and $4.50/hour (V spaces) or $4–$5.25/day (Super Saver and D lots) at UCSD.[S14][S8][S4]
  • Bring a card: CSULB's pay stations are cashless, and UCSD's take cards only.[S14][S4]

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: San Diego Lindbergh Field and Santa Ana/John Wayne Airport)

  • Spring: April averages a high of 69°F and a low of 57°F in San Diego, and 70°F/55°F in Santa Ana.[S29][S30]
  • Summer: July averages 75°F/66°F in San Diego and 79°F/66°F in Santa Ana.[S29][S30]
  • Fall: October averages 75°F/62°F in San Diego and 77°F/59°F in Santa Ana. November is 71°F/55°F and 72°F/53°F.[S29][S30]
  • Winter: January averages 66°F/50°F in San Diego, with about 2.0 inches of rain, and 67°F/49°F in Santa Ana, with 2.6 inches.[S29][S30]
  • CSULB cancels tours in the rain, so keep a backup date for winter visits.[S12]

Siblings on tours

  • UCSD and CSULB cap guests per registration: the student plus 4 at UCSD, and 5 people per registration at CSULB.[S1][S10]

Parent checklist

  • Book Day 1 on a weekday, since CSULB rarely tours on weekends.[S12]
  • UCSD tours book 2–3 months out, and none run after the first week of December 2026.[S2]
  • Have a card ready for every campus's parking.[S14][S4]
  • After each school, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student before the next one blurs it.
