The short version

Trip at a glance

School
University of South Alabama (Mobile, AL)
Days
2 days: fly into Mobile and settle in, then a South Alabama campus tour the next day.
Fly into
Mobile Regional Airport (MOB), about 14 minutes from campus with no traffic. A new downtown Mobile International Airport is expected to open in spring 2027, so check which airport your flight uses.
Best base
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mobile - University Area, about a 3-minute drive to the Mobile Townhouse, where tours start.
Car or no car
Rent a car. Tours ride around campus in open-air vehicles, there's a reserved parking spot for you by the Mobile Townhouse, and downtown Mobile is about 20 minutes away.
Registration
Registration is required: pick a weekday tour or a Southbound Saturday on South Alabama's Campus Visit sign-up page, and register every guest.

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see the University of South Alabama, home of the Jaguars.

Tours start at the Mobile Townhouse, home of the Office of Southbound Visits and Orientation, at 5910 USA South Drive on campus.

Why this order

  • Day 1: fly into Mobile Regional Airport and drive about 13 minutes (about 4.5 miles) to the Holiday Inn Express by campus, with no traffic.
  • Day 2: an information session, then an about 90-minute riding tour of campus, then time with an admissions counselor to ask questions.
  • With extra time, downtown Mobile's Gulf Coast Exploreum is about 21 minutes from campus by car, and the USS Alabama Battleship is about 27 minutes away.
Plan ahead: registration and timing
  • South Alabama offers campus tours on weekdays and on select Saturdays (Southbound Saturdays). Space is limited, so registration is required; pick a date on the Campus Visit sign-up page and watch for your confirmation email.
  • Your student can bring up to two guests, and each guest must be registered. Need to add someone later? Call the visits office at 251-341-3951.
  • Students who attend a guided tour are eligible for a one-time $100 visit credit if they enroll. South Alabama says students enrolling in Spring 2027 must visit by December 18, 2026; check the Visit Our Campus page for later terms.
  • Bringing a group of 10 or more students? Use South Alabama's group tour request instead. Want a preview first? South Alabama has a virtual tour.
  • Tours are outdoors in open-air vehicles. They can be canceled or adjusted for severe weather, and guests are notified. Pets aren't allowed on tours, and if you're bringing a child under 5, email the tours office before you register.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Summers are hot and wet: July averages about 91°F highs and 73°F lows at Mobile Regional Airport, with about 7.7 inches of rain, the wettest month.
  • Winters are mild: January averages about 62°F highs and 41°F lows, and snow is rare.
  • Fall is the driest time: October averages about 80°F highs and about 4 inches of rain, a comfortable month for an open-air tour.
  • Check the Jaguars schedule before you book if you'd like to catch a game while you're in town.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Campus times are to the Mobile Townhouse on USA South Drive, where tours start.
  • Airport times are from today's Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) in west Mobile. The Mobile Airport Authority says the new Mobile International Airport downtown is expected to open in spring 2027 and will take over commercial passenger flights, so check which airport your flight uses.

7. Practical tips

Getting to campus

  • Head for the Mobile Townhouse on USA South Drive and use the reserved parking link South Alabama emails the day before your visit.

Flying in and out

  • Mobile Regional Airport is about 14 minutes from campus and about 30 minutes from downtown with no traffic. The new downtown Mobile International Airport is expected to open in spring 2027, so check which airport your flight uses.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Mobile Regional Airport)

  • Spring: March averages about 72°F highs and 50°F lows, April about 78°F/56°F and May about 85°F/64°F, with about 5.4 to 5.7 inches of rain a month.
  • Summer: June averages about 89°F/71°F and July about 91°F/73°F; July is the wettest month at about 7.7 inches of rain.
  • Fall: September averages about 88°F/69°F, October about 80°F/58°F (the driest month, about 4 inches of rain) and November about 70°F/48°F.
  • Winter: December averages about 64°F/43°F and January about 62°F/41°F, and snow is rare.

Parent checklist

  • Register for a South Alabama weekday tour or Southbound Saturday, and register every guest (up to two).
  • Check the Visit Our Campus page for the $100 visit credit deadline for your student's start term.
  • Book flights into Mobile (check whether your flight uses Mobile Regional or the new downtown airport) and plan a rental car.
  • Book the Holiday Inn Express by campus, a Providence Park hotel or the Battle House downtown.
  • The day before, check your email for check-in instructions and your reserved parking link.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (University of South Alabama): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
