Southern New England College Trip: Yale, Wesleyan, Brown, Providence College and UConn in 3 Days

A parent-first plan for touring Yale, Wesleyan, Brown, Providence College and UConn in three days by car (or four at a slower pace), with the night before in New Haven and two nights in downtown Providence: official sign-ups, visitor parking, drive times, meals and things for siblings.

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents taking a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, on a first look at five quite different schools: Yale's walkable urban campus in New Haven, Wesleyan in Middletown on the Connecticut River, Brown on Providence's College Hill, Providence College about 10 minutes from Providence Station, and UConn's main campus in Storrs.[S1][S4][S5][S10][S15][S7]

It's three days by car: the night before in New Haven, then two nights at one hotel in downtown Providence, with UConn on the way home.[S16][S17]

Why this order

  • Yale and Wesleyan pair well. They're about 37 minutes apart by car, so Yale's one-hour tour fits in the morning and Wesleyan's 1 pm weekday tour after lunch.[S20][S1][S5]
  • One hotel for two nights in Providence. Brown is about a 13-minute walk from the Graduate, and PC is about 8 minutes away by car.[S21][S20]
  • UConn last, on the way out. Storrs is about 1 hr 13 min from Providence, so families heading home toward Hartford, New York or western Massachusetts drive past it anyway.[S20]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Providence College's fall campus visits end December 11, 2026. Book before then if you're visiting this fall.[S14]
  • Tour dates appear only in each school's portal. Check all five before you book hotels.[S2][S6][S9][S10][S14]
  • Wesleyan's schedules may vary. UConn tours typically open for registration at least two months ahead, and last-minute visitors are welcome if space allows.[S5][S8]

2. The suggested 3-day route

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing. Our advice, not a school rule: I-95 and I-91 in Connecticut are often congested, so leave a cushion of at least 45 minutes on top of these estimates.[S20][S21][S22]
  • Prefer a slower pace? Make it 4 days. Spend Day 1 at Yale (and the Peabody Museum) with a second night at the Omni, take Wesleyan's 9 am tour the next morning (about 37 minutes' drive) and continue to Providence that afternoon. Days 2 and 3 below then become Days 3 and 4.[S5][S20][S18]

    Campus

    Yale University (New Haven, CT)

    Where visits start
    • One-hour tours led by current students cover signature campus spaces, academics and student life. Admissions officers give a 30-minute introduction to applying and financial aid. Science and engineering students lead 90-minute STEM tours.[S1]
    • Tours leave from the Yale Visitor Center, 149 Elm Street, open Monday to Saturday; registration is required. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is at 38 Hillhouse Avenue.[S3][S4]
    Visitor parking
    • Yale can't guarantee parking and suggests leaving 10 minutes to find a space. Metered street parking is on Hillhouse Avenue or a block north on Sachem Street, $1.50 an hour with time limits. Grove Street Garage (65 Grove St.) and Audubon Court Garage (78 Audubon St.) are private garages within walking distance.[S4]
    • Staying at the Omni? Walk to the Visitor Center in about 18 minutes.[S21]
    Train, plane and bus
    • Union Station is minutes from campus: a taxi costs about $10, and a free shuttle runs between Union Station and the New Haven Green. Airports: Tweed New Haven (HVN), 4 miles; Bradley (BDL), 53 miles; LaGuardia (LGA), 72 miles.[S4]

    • Student-led group tours on weekdays at 9 am and 1 pm, and on weekends at 12 pm. Advance registration is required and schedules may vary. Hour-long virtual Zoom tours run on Sunday evenings during the semester.[S5]
    • Wesleyan says it doesn't factor demonstrated interest into admission decisions, so not visiting won't hurt an application.[S5]
    Visitor parking
    • Several visitor lots, plus street parking in select spots. Wesleyan publishes an accessible campus map showing entrances, parking, pathways and elevators.[S5]
    Train, plane and bus
    • Middletown is on the Connecticut River, about two hours from New York City and from Boston. From Hartford: I-91 south to Route 9 south, then Route 66 west (Washington St.) to High St. From New Haven: I-91 north to Route 691/66 east, then High St.[S5]

    • The Office of Admission is on the first floor of Harkins Hall.[S15]
    Visitor parking
    • Enter by the Huxley Avenue gate (off Admiral Street) or Phelan Gate on River Avenue. Campus security will direct you to a space, and your confirmation email has specific parking instructions.[S15]
