1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, home of the Islanders, which calls itself the Island University.

TAMU-CC's campus is at 6300 Ocean Drive, surrounded by water. The photo in this guide is an aerial view of the main campus.

Why this order

  • Day 1: fly in to Corpus Christi International, about 22 minutes from the recommended hotel with no traffic, or drive about 3 hours from San Antonio International.
  • Day 2: a guided campus tour from the Islander Welcome Center. Tours last about 1.5 hours and are led by student Island Ambassadors, with time for lunch at a campus dining location.
  • With extra time, the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington are about 25 minutes away on North Beach, and Padre Island National Seashore's Malaquite Visitor Center is about 46 minutes from campus.
Plan ahead: registration and timing
  • TAMU-CC offers guided campus tours for prospective undergraduates on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays during the fall semester. Pick a date and time on the official event calendar.
  • Each tour includes a welcome presentation, a student-led walking tour with Island Ambassadors, a look inside academic buildings and student spaces, a stop at the Campus Store and time with Admissions, Financial Aid and other support offices.
  • General campus tours run on select weekdays. TAMU-CC holds recruitment events on select Saturdays during the academic year, including Island Day, a free campus preview where a student can bring up to three guests.
  • Islander Housing isn't part of general campus tours. Select floor plans may be open to tour at Island Day and Admitted Student Days.
  • Can't make a scheduled tour? Request a self-guided tour packet from TAMU-CC's Campus Tours page.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Corpus Christi is warm most of the year: January averages about 68°F highs and 48°F lows at the airport station, and August is the hottest month at about 95°F highs.
  • September is the wettest month, averaging about 5.4 inches of rain, so pack an umbrella for a fall visit.
  • Guided tours are walking tours, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sunscreen in the warm months.
  • Check the Islanders schedule before you book, since home games bring extra traffic to campus.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Campus times are to the Mary and Jeff Bell Library, where the Islander Welcome Center is.

7. Practical tips

Getting to campus

  • Park in the Bayside Parking Garage with your plate on your registration, then walk to the Islander Welcome Center on the east side of the Bell Library.

Flying in and out

  • Corpus Christi International is about 26 minutes from campus. From San Antonio International, plan on about 3 hours each way.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Corpus Christi International Airport)

  • Spring: March averages about 77°F highs and 58°F lows, and May warms to about 87°F/71°F with about 3.4 inches of rain.
  • Summer: July averages about 94°F/76°F and August about 95°F/76°F, so plan outdoor time for the morning.
  • Fall: September averages about 91°F/73°F with about 5.4 inches of rain, the wettest month; October cools to about 85°F/65°F and November to about 76°F/56°F.
  • Winter: December averages about 70°F/50°F and January about 68°F/48°F, the mildest stretch for walking tours.

Parent checklist

  • Register for a weekday guided tour on TAMU-CC's event calendar, or look for an Island Day date.
  • Put your license plate number on the tour registration so your Bayside garage parking is validated.
  • Book flights into Corpus Christi or San Antonio and plan a rental car.
  • Book a Corpus Christi hotel on the south side or downtown.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes, water and sunscreen.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
