The University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts in 2 Days: A Tulsa College Trip

1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see two private universities in the same city: The University of Tulsa, home of the Golden Hurricane, and Oral Roberts University, home of the Golden Eagles.

UTulsa sits just east of downtown, and ORU is in south Tulsa on Lewis Avenue, so both fit in two easy days from one hotel. Check both athletics calendars for home games on your dates. The photo in this guide shows McFarlin Library on the UTulsa campus.

Why this order

  • Day 1: fly into Tulsa, drive about 16 minutes to the hotel and take UTulsa's Daily Visit: an admission presentation, a walking tour with a University Ambassador and a one-on-one faculty meeting.
  • With extra time, Gathering Place on the Arkansas River is about 13 minutes from UTulsa by car and has no admission fee.
  • Day 2: drive about 20 minutes to ORU for an Eagle Day Visit, then fly home from TUL, about 28 minutes away.
Plan ahead: registration and timing
  • UTulsa's Daily Visits run Monday through Friday, plus Saturdays from September through April. Pick a date and time on the Daily Visit calendar.
  • Saturday UTulsa visits skip the faculty meeting, and UTulsa notes that visiting when classes aren't in session (Saturdays, breaks and holidays) means a quieter campus than usual.
  • ORU's Eagle Day Visit is a visit you customize: take a campus tour, meet faculty and talk with an admissions representative. Register from ORU's Campus Visit page, which also lists ORU Quest and other visit events.
  • Bringing a group? UTulsa hosts chaperoned groups of 10 to 40 high school students from September through April, and ORU has its own group visit registration on its Campus Visit page.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Tulsa winters are cool: January averages about 49°F highs and 28°F lows at the airport, with about 1.6 inches of precipitation.
  • Spring is mild and wet: April averages about 72°F/50°F, and May is the wettest month, with about 5.7 inches of rain.
  • Summer is hot: July averages about 94°F highs and 73°F lows, and August is nearly as warm.
  • Fall is a comfortable visit season: October averages about 74°F highs and 51°F lows. Check the Golden Hurricane and Golden Eagles calendars for home games on your dates.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with campus points geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim and hotel points from the Expedia listings. Rush hour adds time, so leave a cushion. UTulsa times are to the campus near 800 S. Tucker Drive, and ORU times are to 7777 S. Lewis Avenue.

7. Practical tips

Booking the visits

  • UTulsa: book on the Daily Visit calendar. A weekday visit includes the one-on-one faculty meeting; Saturday visits don't.
  • ORU: register for an Eagle Day Visit from the Campus Visit page, or look at the ORU Quest dates listed there.

Flying in and out

  • TUL is about 16 minutes from UTulsa and the downtown hotels and about 28 minutes from ORU with no traffic. Ending at ORU still leaves a short drive to your flight.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Tulsa International Airport station)

  • Spring: April averages about 72°F highs and 50°F lows with about 4.4 inches of rain; May is the wettest month, at about 5.7 inches.
  • Summer: July averages about 94°F/73°F and August about 93°F/72°F.
  • Fall: September averages about 85°F/63°F, October about 74°F/51°F and November about 61°F/39°F.
  • Winter: January averages about 49°F/28°F and December about 51°F/31°F, with under 2.5 inches of precipitation a month.

Parent checklist

  • Book a UTulsa Daily Visit on its calendar.
  • Register for an ORU Eagle Day Visit from ORU's Campus Visit page.
  • Book flights into TUL and a rental car.
  • Book a hotel; ask about UTulsa rates, which UTulsa says some area hotels offer.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes for both campus tours, plus layers for Tulsa's changeable spring and fall weather.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

2 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (The University of Tulsa and Oral Roberts University): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
