Alabama and Mississippi State in 2 Days: An SEC College Trip
A parent-first plan for seeing the University of Alabama and Mississippi State University from one hotel on UA's campus in Tuscaloosa: official tour sign-ups, free visitor parking at both Welcome Centers, the Bryant Museum and the Wade Clock Museum for siblings, and Alabama weather by season.

Fly into
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (BHM), about 1 hour 15 minutes and 61 miles from the hotel with no traffic.
Best base
Hotel Capstone, the only hotel on UA's campus: about a 4-minute drive or 21-minute walk to the Randall Welcome Center, where every UA tour starts.
Car or transit
You'll need a car. Mississippi State is about 1 hour 49 minutes and 84 miles west of the hotel with no traffic.
Registration
Both schools take visit sign-ups online. Mississippi State schedules visits on weekdays only, and both campuses run on Central time.
1. Who this guide is for
This plan is for parents with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, who want to see two Southeastern Conference universities in one short trip: Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Mississippi State in Starkville.
You sleep on UA's campus both nights, walk to the Bryant Museum next door, and make one day trip west to Starkville.
Why this order
Day 1: UA's guided tour lasts about 2 hours, with an information session, a student-led tour of top campus spots and visits to some residence halls.
Day 2: Mississippi State is about 1 hour 49 minutes away. Its visit is an admissions overview and a tour with a Roadrunner student recruiter, about 2 hours in all, and you can add a Sanderson Center or residence-hall tour.
Both visits start at a Welcome Center with free visitor parking, so there's no hunting for a garage.
Both campuses give you a free parking pass
Alabama: parking is free for registered visitors. Print the pass UA emails after you register and put it on the dash; if it didn't arrive, check in at Bryce Main for one.
Mississippi State: park in the Cullis Wade Depot (Barnes & Noble/Welcome Center) lot and pick up a free guest parking pass at the Welcome Center desk, under the large MSU clock.
Elsewhere at MSU, timed visitor spaces are paid through the ParkMobile app (3-hour maximum, plus a $0.35 app fee), and the Old Main and North garages are card-only.
Tour availability varies by season.
Tuscaloosa hotels have limited availability and above-average prices on Crimson Tide home football weekends and UA Commencement weekends; UA suggests Birmingham or Hoover if you must visit then.
Summers are hot: July averages about 92°F highs and 72°F lows at Tuscaloosa's airport, so plan walking tours for the morning.
Winters are mild, with January averaging about 56°F highs and 36°F lows, but February is the wettest month at about 5.4 inches of rain.
Mississippi State doesn't schedule campus tours on weekends or on days its calendar marks "Campus Event" or "University Holiday."
2. The suggested 2-day plan
Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. The Tuscaloosa–Starkville drive is about 84 miles each way, so leave a buffer before your MSU visit time.
Both universities are on Central time.

The full visit, information session plus campus tour, takes about 2 hours. When you register you can add a Sanderson Center tour, residence halls with model rooms, a meeting with a representative from your student's major, or the daily Fraternity and Sorority Life session.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits
For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.
Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.
Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.
Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
Division I (University of Alabama and Mississippi State University): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.
Planning around the season
Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
Add your dates and how you're getting there, and we'll pull this guide into one plan: tour sign-up links, the hotel base, parking or airport notes, the route and meals.
