1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents touring three upstate New York universities with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings: Syracuse University, Colgate University in the village of Hamilton and Cornell University in Ithaca.[S5][S10][S1]

It's two days by car, with a hotel the night before in Syracuse and night 1 at the Colgate Inn, a short walk from Colgate's campus.[S16][S17]

Why this order

  • Start in Syracuse. Syracuse Hancock is the nearest major airport for Colgate and about 75 minutes from Cornell, and Syracuse runs morning and afternoon weekday visits.[S12][S1][S5]
  • Colgate in the afternoon. Hamilton is about 1 hr 10 min from Syracuse's Visitor Center, and Colgate's portal lists afternoon visits. Sleep at the Colgate Inn in the village.[S19][S11][S17]
  • Cornell last. Ithaca is about 1 hr 50 min from Hamilton, so Day 2 is a morning drive and a Cornell visit, then home.[S19]
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Tour dates appear only in each school's portal. Check all three before you book hotels.[S2][S6][S11]
  • Colgate pauses campus visits for winter: visits end Dec 11 and resume Feb 8, 2027. Colgate is also closed Dec 24–Jan 1 and has its own Thanksgiving-week schedule and closures.[S10]
  • Cornell's Welcome Center closures include Nov 25–29 and Dec 21, 2026–Jan 18, 2027, and it's closed on Saturdays in December and January.[S1]
  • Syracuse's Saturday visits don't include a school or college session.[S5][S6]

2. The suggested 2-day route

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, using addresses geocoded with OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Colgate's legs use a point on its campus. Our advice, not a school rule: add 20–30 minutes to each long leg, and more in snow.[S19][S20][S21]
  • Alternative order: if Colgate has no afternoon visit on your date, Syracuse to Cornell is about 1 hr 21 min (53.4 mi).[S19]
