1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents flying in with a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see Utah State University, home of the Aggies, in Logan.

Logan sits in Cache Valley, 85 miles north of Salt Lake City. Campus tours begin in the Taggart Student Center, a short walk from Old Main, shown in this guide's photo.

Why this order

  • Fly into Salt Lake City the day before and drive about 1 hour 40 minutes to Logan, or spend the first night in downtown Salt Lake City.
  • Visit day: the campus tour lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and is led by student ambassadors, who treat you to Aggie Ice Cream.
  • Afterward, siblings can try Aggie Ice Cream at the creamery or see the free Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, both a short walk from the Taggart Student Center.
Pick the right visit
  • Logan campus tours run on weekdays and select Saturdays during the school year; register through USU's tour page at least 2 days ahead. Walk-ins aren't accepted.
  • Each student can bring up to two guests on a tour.
  • You can add an on-campus housing and dining information session, with a free lunch, when you register for the tour.
  • USU's colleges also offer major-specific tours, and tours in other languages are offered on Saturdays, with registration closing 2 weeks ahead.
  • Check the admissions events page for open houses and other visit events.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Logan winters are snowy: January averages about 13 inches of snow at the NOAA normals station on campus, so allow extra time on the drive from Salt Lake City.
  • Summer is the driest season, with July highs around 88°F.
  • Questions about a tour? Email campustours@usu.edu.

2. The suggested 1-day plan

  • Drive times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, and walking times use OpenStreetMap foot routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Times to campus are to the Taggart Student Center, where USU campus tours begin.

7. Practical tips

Getting to campus

  • Tours start in the Taggart Student Center's Big Blue Room (229); the Big Blue Terrace is about a 4-minute walk away.
  • Bring a card or phone for parking: there's no free parking on campus, but tour guests get validation.

Flying in and out

  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is about 1 hour 40 minutes from Logan hotels and the Taggart Student Center with no traffic.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Logan Utah State Univ station)

  • Spring: April averages about 57°F highs and 36°F lows, with about 2.3 inches of precipitation.
  • Summer: July averages about 88°F/60°F, with about 0.6 inches of precipitation.
  • Fall: October averages about 61°F/39°F, with about 1.8 inches of precipitation.
  • Winter: January averages about 32°F/18°F, with about 1.8 inches of precipitation and about 13 inches of snow.

Parent checklist

  • Register for a Utah State campus tour at least 2 days ahead (walk-ins aren't accepted), and add the housing and dining session if you want the free lunch.
  • Book flights into Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and a rental car.
  • Book a hotel in Logan, or Salt Lake City for the first or last night.
  • Plan to pay for campus parking ($2 an hour, $10 a day maximum) and ask about tour validation.
  • Pack comfortable walking shoes and layers; Logan winters are snowy.
  • After the visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (Utah State University, Logan campus): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
