1. Who this guide is for

This plan is for parents bringing a high schooler, and maybe younger siblings, to see the University of Vermont, home of the Catamounts in Burlington, Vermont.

UVM's Guided Campus Tour pairs an admissions info session with a student-guided walking tour of central campus. The photo in this guide shows Ira Allen Chapel.

Why this order

  • Day 1: fly into BTV, about 13 minutes from the DoubleTree or 16 minutes from the Hilton Garden Inn downtown, and check in.
  • Day 2: check in at the Admissions Welcome Center on the Davis Center's third floor for the info session, student panel and student-led campus tour.
  • With extra time, the free Fleming Museum of Art is on campus, about a 10-minute walk from the Davis Center.
Plan ahead: registration and timing
  • Pick a date on the calendar on UVM's visit portal, then click the event name under the calendar to register. Event times are listed in Eastern time.
  • UVM says students applying for Fall 2027 or Fall 2028 who complete an official, in-person campus visit before November 1 of their senior year are eligible for a $4,000 renewable Visit Award. Check the visit page for the terms for out-of-state students and Vermont residents.
  • Individual visits to learn about a specific major or college are for students in grades 10–12 and transfer students. From mid-March to May they're for admitted students only.
  • If no calendar date fits, UVM Admissions asks you to reach out at admissions@uvm.edu or (802) 656-3370 to find another date.
Tour availability varies by season.
  • Winter is long and snowy: January averages about 29°F highs, 13°F lows and 21 inches of snow at the Burlington airport, and December and March each average 17 inches or more.
  • Summer is mild: July averages about 82°F highs and 62°F lows. June is the wettest month, at about 4.3 inches of rain.
  • Fall is cool: October averages about 59°F highs and 42°F lows, and November averages about 5.7 inches of snow.
  • Check the Catamounts athletics schedule for home games on your dates, since game days bring extra traffic and parking demand.

2. The suggested 2-day plan

  • Drive and walk times are no-traffic estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, with addresses geocoded by OpenStreetMap Nominatim. Campus times are to the Dudley H. Davis Center at 590 Main St., where the Admissions Welcome Center is.

7. Practical tips

Getting to campus

  • Enter "UVM Campus Tour Parking" in your map app and park in the yellow-signed admissions spaces in the Jeffords lot, not the ParkMobile visitor areas.
  • From the DoubleTree, campus is close enough to walk, about 14 minutes.

Flying in and out

  • Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV) is about 15 minutes from campus with no traffic, and the Hilton Garden Inn and Best Western list free airport shuttles.

Weather by season (1991–2020 NOAA normals: Burlington International Airport station)

  • Spring: April averages about 55°F highs and 36°F lows, with about 3.1 inches of rain and 4 inches of snow; May warms to about 69°F/48°F.
  • Summer: July averages about 82°F/62°F, with about 4.1 inches of rain.
  • Fall: October averages about 59°F/42°F, with about 3.8 inches of rain; November averages about 46°F/32°F and 5.7 inches of snow.
  • Winter: January averages about 29°F/13°F, with about 2.1 inches of precipitation and 21 inches of snow.

Parent checklist

  • Book a Guided Campus Tour on UVM's visit portal (times are in Eastern time).
  • Ask whether your student's visit date qualifies for UVM's Visit Award.
  • Book flights into BTV and plan a rental car or a hotel airport shuttle.
  • Book a hotel from UVM's lodging list and ask about UVM visitor rates.
  • Save "UVM Campus Tour Parking" in your map app for the Jeffords lot.
  • After each visit, take five minutes to jot down what stood out to your student.

8. Student-athlete recruiting visits

For families whose student hopes to play a college sport. Rules below are the NCAA's; each school's links were checked Oct 26, 2026.

Coaches arrange the recruiting part of a visit, not the admissions office. The tour sign-ups in this guide are for the regular family visit. An official (school-paid) visit is offered by the school, and contact with coaches follows NCAA rules that vary by division, sport and grade level.

Start with your sport's questionnaire, then email the coaches. The NCAA suggests emailing coaches with your achievements, highlight videos and interest in their program, including your name, position, NCAA ID and graduation year.

1 Division I

NCAA basics for parents

  • Unofficial visit: any campus visit you or your family pay for. You can take as many as you like; in Divisions I and II each one has to come after the first permissible date for your sport.
  • Official visit: a visit paid for by the school. Each school can offer your student only one. Before a Division I official visit, your student must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center, be on the school's institutional request list, and the school must have their high school transcripts.
  • Division I (University of Vermont): on an official visit the school can pay for travel for the student and up to two family members, lodging, up to three meals a day for the student and up to four family members, and up to $60 a person in entertainment, including five home-game tickets. On an unofficial visit there are no free meals, but the school can give up to three home-game tickets. Division I uses recruiting calendars with contact, evaluation, quiet and dead periods; in a dead period, no in-person contact and no visits.
  • Rules change. Confirm with the coach, or check the NCAA's recruiting page and recruiting calendars, before you plan dates.

Planning around the season

  • Check each school's athletics schedule (linked above) before you pick dates, so a coach meeting doesn't land on a road trip or game day for your sport.
  • Our recommendation, not a school rule: ask the coach whether they can line up an admissions session or tour around your meeting. If not, book the regular family tour yourself through the official sign-up links in this guide, and leave time between the two.
